Greetings, all!

It’s Wednesday and that means it’s time for a Hump Day Hook!

I’m finishing my release celebration of Lust in Time: Erotic Romance through the Ages with a final clip from Giant Killer, the 1000 BC entry in this great collection from Rob Rosen and MLR Press.

Some commotion stirred the rear of the hall; heads swiveled and necks bowed as the audience members whispered one to another. Jonathan recognized his father’s seneschal, Ziba, moving across the back of the chamber. The family retainer was accompanied by a tall young man who looked every which way, trying to take in all there was to be seen. Jonathan suppressed a smile. What a rube!

The crowd parted as the newcomers strode forward to stand before King Saul. The young man was… a vision… so handsome that he had to be an angel—although surely no angel would look so travel worn. The youth was lean and bronzed with dark hair; he made brief eye contact with Jonathan. When he looked away, Jonathan had to force himself to breathe—the young man’s piercing blue eyes had completely entranced him.

Greetings, all!

As I’m celebrating the release of Lust in Time: Erotic Romance through the Ages—a great collection edited by Rob Rosen and released by MLR Press, my clip today is from my contribution, Giant Killer, the 1000 BC entry in the anthology.

The handsome warrior was more than an ordinary soldier; he was the king’s son. Surely he will have no time for a shepherd. David had clearly heard Jonathan’s frustration when he got saddled with his care. Silently he followed behind.

Jonathan’s chamber befit a soldier—sparse and spare, the room was little more than utilitarian—yet David could still tell he was with royalty. Rich woods and textiles comprised what masculine furnishings there were. A hint of cloves seemed to hang in the air. There was no decoration.

“As my father decided, that is to be your bed.” Jonathan pointed to a small cot shoved into a corner. Spare pieces of armor were stacked nearby.

“Th—thank you, my lord.” David looked around the room, missing the simplicity of Jesse’s house. His excitement had waned, and never had he wished so much to be in Bethlehem. Suddenly he felt very much alone.

“There is water and a basin so you may wash and change clothing.”

“Yes, my lord,” he replied, keeping his eyes averted. Looking at Jonathan just made his heart race and his mouth dry—it was easier to look at the floor or walls—anywhere but at the attractive soldier.

Lust in Time: Erotic Romance through the Ages is now available from MLR Press in both print and ebook formats.

Since I’ve been tagged by Ciaran Dwynvil in the 7/7/7 meme on Facebook (this is how you play: Go to page 7, 77 or 177 of your manuscript, count down 7 lines, then copy the next 7 to your status; after that, name 7 more authors to come out and play), I’m taking the opportunity to promote the Lust in Time release. My bit is from my story Giant Killer, which is the 1000BC entry in the anthology:

While he and Ziba travelled from Bethlehem, David had planned how he would answer Saul, how he would make the king see that Jesse needed him at home. Back and forth he’d debated with himself until he knew exactly what he would say. Now that was all gone, and he was just a shepherd kneeling before the mightiest man in Israel.

When Saul bid him look up, David glanced at the soldier. The man smiled—and that smile reached those deep-brown eyes and filled David with a sense of calm and confidence. He realized that no words would convince Saul; only music could sway the king. And music he could make.

Greetings, all!

Well, here we are for the very last Six Sentence Sunday tour! For me it has been a tremendous pleasure to meet so many new people through just six sentences of their writing. I hope that everyone has enjoyed my contributions as much as I have theirs.

As promised, I’m finishing with a snippet from Giant Killer. There is so much left to pick from that I was a little stumped. I decided to go with this scene—one of my favorites—following the death of Goliath:

David lifted the pitcher, glad for the clean scent that cut through the coppery tang from the sodden tunic at his feet—water sloshed out of the basin as his hand shook wetting a rag; he began to wipe dully at the brownish stains on his hands and arms.

Unexpectedly Jonathan was there, taking charge of the cloth; deep furrows split his forehead as he considered David. Softly, he began to wipe the dried blood from David’s face, “You were very brave.”

David wanted to look into those hazel eyes forever, and he raised a hand to Jonathan’s brow, seeking to smooth away the worry lines, “I did it so you wouldn’t have to.”

Some mix of thoughts and emotions played across Jonathan’s face. He ran a knuckle along David’s jaw, and a cool fire burned his skin in the wake of that touch—then Jonathan’s mouth was on his, and David drowned in the flavors of honey and wine and the cloves that Jonathan loved to chew.

BTW: Stay tuned for Lust in Time‘s release date. As soon as I find out from Rob, I’ll post the info and a link. I’m sure there will be lots of other great stories as well.

Greetings, all!

First things first: For all of you wondering what will happen to David and Jonathan after the end of Six Sentence Sunday, take heart! Giant Killer has been selected by Rob Rosen for his Lust in Time: Erotic Romance Through the Ages collection! The story will be appearing as the 1000 BC entry in the anthology from MLR Press (which should be coming out in March). I will keep everybody posted.

Last week we were with David as he entered King Saul’s presence. This week’s snippet is from Jonathan’s take on the proceedings:

Some commotion stirred the rear of the hall—heads swiveled and necks bowed as the audience members whispered one to another—Jonathan recognized his father’s seneschal, Ziba, moving across the back of the chamber. The family retainer was accompanied by a tall young man who looked every which way, trying to take in all there was to be seen. Jonathan suppressed a smile as he thought, what a rube!

Greetings, all!

As I said last week, I’m continuing with Giant Killer through the end of January. Given the limited time frame, I’m going to jump forward a bit.

This week we rejoin David, who has obeyed Jesse‘s command to go to Saul, as he enters the hall at Gibeah:

Ziba stopped in front of a platform on which sat a stern looking, older man—Saul, David assumed. But David’s attention was diverted from the king by the handsome, rangy soldier standing behind the raised chair—long, sun-lightened hair framed an olive face of pleasing planes and angles, although David could tell that the man’s nose had been broken; an imperfection that played counterpoint to the soulful eyes to either side. But the warrior’s slight smirk seemed at odds with those eyes—yet David could have spent much time gazing into their hazel depths.

The royal retainer introduced him to the king, and all the words he’d intended to say to Saul fled from David’s mind. He dropped his gaze to the floor; his face felt hot and his palms were cold. This is all so different than I had imagined.

Greetings and Happy New Year, all!

I’ve decided to stay with Giant Killer through the official end of Six Sentence Sunday on the 27th. Today we rejoin Jonathan and Evram—after last week they had temporarily run out of Philistines to fight:

Jonathan examined the pass. His eyes fell upon a pile of rocks held in place by wooden staves—a defensive installation meant to crush attacking Israelites—looking further, he found a stack of wood intended for the watch fire. And the LORD shall provide. “Quickly, Evram, help me to reinforce this side.”

The young man realized what Jonathan meant to do: by redirecting the landslide to the opposite side of the pass, they were able to reduce the width of the narrow path even further, thus the Philistines would be able to approach only by one or two at a time.

A great war cry rose from out of the valley.

Six Sentence Sunday – 30 December 2012

I hope that everyone had a festive and happy Christmas! Ours was quiet—which was a nice change of pace!

I apologize for last Sunday’s non-posting snafu—had everything all set to go and never got out of draft mode!

This week is again from Giant Killer. Following last week’s six, we rejoin Jonathan and Evram in battle with the Philistines:

Evram loosed a large stone he had picked up from the slope’s scree—the rock caught a second Philistine in the face, blinding him. Recovered from his surprise at the attack, a third soldier managed to free his sword and made for the young armor bearer. Jonathan turned, following through, and put him to death with a well-placed slash to his throat.

Evram turned to Jonathan after dispatching the blinded soldier. “My lord, where has the fourth gotten to?”

“I imagine we are to have additional company shortly.”

Greetings, all!

This week we continue Giant Killer with Jonathan and Evram. Last week they came face to face with the arrogance of the Philistine invaders.

Jonathan climbed the remaining distance, scrabbling up with his hands and feet. Evram followed after, his cudgel now serving as a walking staff. Confident in their larger number, the Philistines stood relaxed and loose, watching the two Israelites scale the slope.

The Hebrew prince paused briefly as if to catch his breath. The first of the soldiers, the one who wore no tunic, moved quickly forward, making to grapple with Jonathan. He fell backwards in front of his companions, a startled look in his eyes as Jonathan’s short sword pulled out of his gut, freeing his intestines.

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to check out the rest of the loop.

Merry Christmas everybody! ‘Til next time!
